The local paper are going to do a feature of our Kilimanjaro climb. I am delighted about this as the more publicity we can get the greater the chance of raising significant funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Photographs were required to go with the article. Although I would rather not have my photo taken, preferring to stay behind the lens. it is in a very good cause so I braced myself.
The young lady photographer arrived at the office promptly last Tuesday and we made our way over to Christchurch Park. Two types of photograph were required, the first being of me in my banana costume, the photographer wanted an action shot therefore asked me to leap about. Several passing dog walkers looked amused to see a star-jumping banana.
The second photo was to be of me in my tracksuit 'training'. In my minds eye I imagined that she would require me to walk towards the camera along a footpath - not too bad, I thought, I can do that. However, unfortunately I was mistaken, she became artistic and asked me to pose halfway up a hill (side on - cringe!) pretending to climb (I'm not an actor) while she crouched on the grass beside me and took photographs at 45 degree angle at close range. I cannot imagine a more deeply unflattering image.
When discussing the article and photographs with the paper editor the next day, I was told that the photographs will now stay in their archive for ever more and if I ever venture into politics - they will be dug out for use. How very reassuring!
Fortunately, I have no political aspirations.
The editorial will be published in the Evening Star on Friday 2nd October 2009
