I purchased a footpath map of the local area from the newsagent and set about planning a circular route for my training that as far as possible avoided using roads.
This is when I realised that I cannot read maps. However, I interestingly discovered that the local area contains landmarks such as 'Waddle Donkey Lane' and 'Waggle Goose Way'. Clearly the cartographer had a frustrating time compiling the map as he had labelled one section 'Brambles - would be less of a problem if more walkers carried a pair of secateurs'. Looks like I'll have to add these to my ever increasing wishlist of equipment.
Having given up on trying to decipher the map I set out again, opting for yet another direction. This time, with the assistance of a helpful dog walker met along the route, I walked a pleasant circular route of about six miles, returning home before dark. Once home, I referred to the footpath map again and was able to trace the footpath that I had just walked. Route planning in reverse, excellent!
