The prospect of climbing Kilimanjaro filled me with an initial surge of energy and excitement that swept me along for several days. Once this initial tidal wave of adrenoline had subsided I was left with an uneasy feeling that I had bitten off more than I could chew, which was re-inforced on my first training walk.
First outing: After a quarter of a mile, I developed cramp in my calf (note to self: must stretch muscles before setting out), after a further mile I became aware that my thighs were rubbing together unpleasantly (note to self: buy a track suit for training), after walking for an hour I noticed that my fingers appeared to have swollen to the size of small courgettes (note to self: remove rings before heading out).
All in all, this inaugural training session was not a glowing success......Hmmm, this really was going to be difficult.
